DIY Chalk Painted Dining Table

DIYChalkPaintedTablezevyjoy

Last week I shared about all the things that have been thrifted or repurposed in our home here.  One of my favorite repurposing projects was our dining room table.  Originally it was a Craigslist find and last year I decided to paint it with bright white chalk paint.

I really went back and forth over the color and whether the white would be too much, but honestly it has become one of my favorite stand out pieces in our home.  Don’t be afraid to try something a little risky when decorating! The process was pretty simple and took several steps but was a smooth project overall.

I have shared other chalk paint projects for my dresser here and our coffee table here.  These will both be great tutorials to read up on if you are deciding to try this on your furniture.  I would recommend giving them a look because they share some things I learned with trial and error.

But to achieve the specific distressed look of this table I wanted to share the basic steps with you today.

For materials I used…

Here is how I painted this table…

  • I wiped the table down with a damp lint free cloth.
  • I applied one coat of the brown to the entire table. I did this because the original stain was very orange and when sanded, I wanted a darker brown to show through.  As a result you can see all the brown stains where it is distressed and it is a pleasant surprise!
  • I then applied 2 full coats of the white paint and then finished with a 3rd watered down coat to finish.
  • After everything had adequetly dried I took my sandpapers (shared in this post) and gave a light distressing.  I wanted it to look worn but not overly worn.
  • I sealed the entire piece with 3 coats of varnish and it has held up incredible!

I know that sometimes I get funny looks from people when we have so much neutral in a house with little children running around – but it hasn’t been a problem for us.  When spills/accidents happen we are quick to clean up but it isn’t a big deal. We use placemats and still enjoy our red spaghetti dinners – ha!

Chalk paint is such a forgiving material to use and I just love that most of the time very little prep is involved!

It is always nice to try it out on something smaller, just so you can get used to how it feels and how it glides on your brush.

I hope this helps answer any questions you may have about this table and that for a simple thrifted or Craigslist find you can give furniture a whole new look for a low price!

  3. Hi! I love your blog! I’ve been eyeing your dining table for a long time and am about to attempt! Did you apply Zinsser after the stain to prevent it seeping thru the white paint? Also, my table already has a dark stain, should I still sand it down first? Thank you!
