DIY Chalkboard and Easy Mantel Styling

DIYChalkboardzevyjoy

Even though I have the theme and majority of my Christmas decor done, I find myself still moving things around (almost like I always do any other time of the year).  Once my handmade wreath around my dear head had wilted, the mantel was due for a change.  I had this large nursery print we used for my son and daughter here.  A few years back I painted the glass with black chalk paint because the prints were no longer being used.  I wrote a verse on it and had in hung on our wall for a long time.  As I moved things around, this chalkboard found it’s way into a corner for months, unused and unnoticed.

I picked it up and thought it was the perfect size for arranging on the mantel, but I was ready to change it up a bit.  I was craving a traditional green chalkboard color and thought it would fit perfect with the tree right there.

So I ran to Michaels and grabbed my supplies!

This was such an easy and inexpensive change.  I can not wait to play around with it as the seasons change as well as my taste.

Here is what you will need…

  • Empty frame with glass insert.
  • Sponge Applicator
  • Small paint brush for corners and sides.
  • Chalkboard paint (I used Martha Stewarts Chalkboard paint in dark green and I LOVE it!)

Here is how simple this project is! You will…

  • Prepare your surface according to your paint’s recomendations.  I just wiped mine with a damp cloth and then a dry cloth.
  • Apply one nice smooth and thin coat using the sponge applicator.  My frame/glass was professionally framed so I could not remove the glass to paint it first.  The example shown here could have the glass removed and painted, then reinserted.  Whatever your preference is will work fine.
  • Let dry the appropriate amount of time (according to the directions) and apply a second or third coat.
  • I needed to let mine dry at least 24 hours before I could put any chalk on it.
  • Once it is totally dry, you can season the board by rubbing then wiping chalk all over it.
  • At this point you can either write on the board or like I did, leave it plain. I enjoyed the look just as it was.

When styling a mantel it can be as simple as layering shapes and frames as done here.  I also have this lovely copper wire shelf from Axel CO. that is geometric in shape.  I loved pairing it with the squares as it resembles a tree or triangle.

Simple really can be beautiful and makes a statement all on it’s own.

  1. Do you find the MS chalkboard paint resists “ghosting”? I’ve been using a spray on chalkboard paint, and no matter how much I “season” the chalkboard, it ghosts like crazy and I have to repaint every time I change the board. Love your site – such creative ideas and beautifully displayed!

    1. Hi Elizabeth, I have not had trouble so far – if I stick to normal chalk sticks. But if using pens or a variety of chalk products then yes they are more difficult for me to erase on any of my chalkboards. Thanks so much for stopping by!
