I have seen these adorable blanket scarves all over lately and went looking for one. Of course, it was out of my budget – so I figured out a way to make a scarf for a third of the cost!

Here is what you will need-
– 2 yards of 100% cotton flannel (I found this material at JoAnn Fabrics and it was 50% off. They often have great coupons)
– a stitch ripper (example here)

This is so simple, you will not need to cut any material off or sew a stitch! The fabric I used measures 44 inches wide, therefore you will only need to have the fabric cut 2 yards long. You will be fraying the short ends of your scarf (not the long sides). All you need to do is start ripping the the first few threads that run horizontal in your material. You will continue to rip the thread across (the picture below shows a close up of what this will look like) until you have ripped about an inch off. The vertical threads will remain in place and create a fringe. This did take some time (it took me about a movie’s worth of sitting on the couch and fraying) but it wasn’t too bad. Honestly there are tons of ways to use this scarf! It’s giant! I will be adding a post in the near future showing you some ways to style blanket scarves. Hope you try it out!

    1. Hi Jacki,
I kept the fabric at the original width on the bolt; the particular fabric I linked and used myself measures at 44 inches wide. If you do it this way there is no need to cut any of the fabric except the length of 2 yards – I hope this helps!
      Thanks!

          1. Hi Caitlin! I don’t see why that would be a problem at all, it will just be a few inches thinner but that wont change the look or ability to tie the scarf as far as I can tell. Hope you enjoy trying it out!

  1. I’m so excited to try this tonight! I bought my flannel today- my goodness it was hard to choose from! I’ll be fraying away as I read your post on how to tie this beauty! I did break down and order one last week but I’m hoping to make all the rest. And what great gifts for fall birthdays!

  2. What a clever idea! I love the scarf. I’m going to JoAnn’s this weekend. I hope they have the same flannel you used because I really like it. Was the seam ripper used to just get started to rip out the threads?

    1. Susan – thank you so much! The seam ripper was used initially to rip the threads and throughout as needed. Hope that helps!

  3. thank you for the turtorial! Found the fabric at Joanns, frayed the edges while watching American Horror Story. Fabulous idea, got a great scarf for $10.

  4. Hello,
This is wonderful advice. Would it be possible to wash the scarf without it getting ripped further due to no stiches?
    Thank you!

    1. Hi Olga,
that is a great question! I just washed mine and had no problems at all. I would suggest using a gentle wash cycle and then hang drying. Hopefully that helps and thanks for stopping by!
