In this blog post, we’ll explore five tips for transforming your home into an art gallery with our expert tips for showcasing artwork, from mixing vintage with new pieces to creating your own, and embracing diverse styles and mediums, including gallery walls and sculptural elements!
Art has the power to transform a space, adding personality, depth, and visual interest to your home decor. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just starting to explore the world of art, displaying it effectively can make all the difference in elevating your interior design.
Mixing Vintage With New:
Embrace the charm of juxtaposition by mixing vintage art pieces with contemporary ones. Combining artworks from different eras adds depth and character to your space, creating a curated and eclectic look. Pair a mid-century modern painting with a sleek, minimalist sculpture or hang a collection of antique prints alongside modern photography. This blend of old and new creates visual interest and tells a story of your unique style and taste.
I love collecting older pieces of art and this also includes the frames. I have found many pieces antiquing and thrifting. It’s important to just keep your eyes open and have an idea of what you are looking for!
Create Your Own:
Infuse your home with a personal touch by creating your own artwork. Whether you’re an aspiring painter, photographer, or crafter, expressing your creativity through art adds a special and meaningful dimension to your decor. Experiment with different mediums and techniques to create pieces that reflect your personality and passions. From abstract paintings to handmade textiles or even DIY sculptures, your creations will become cherished focal points in your home.
I wanted to finish off the gallery wall we have at the top of our stairs and wasn’t finding anything I really liked when shopping. I chose to purchase a paint by number and it took less than hours to complete. I cropped a section out and added this sweet lighthouse to the wall. Art doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive!
Using Different Styles And Mediums:
Diversify your art collection by incorporating pieces in different styles and mediums. Mix paintings, prints, photographs, and mixed media artwork to create a dynamic and visually stimulating display. Experiment with a variety of subjects, from landscapes and abstracts to portraits and still lifes, to add variety and intrigue to your walls. By embracing diversity in your art choices, you can create a gallery-like atmosphere that captivates and inspires.
In the above examples, you can see the final piece I am working on for our gallery wall up here. It is a playful scene of needlepoint birds (I am just winging it and so there is really no right or wrong way to mix up your art). I had enough paintings/prints and I knew I wanted something to break it all up a bit visually. I was hoping for something unexpected and I think this needlework piece will do just that.
Gallery Walls:
Create a striking focal point in your home with a gallery wall that showcases your art collection in a cohesive and curated way. Mix and match frames, sizes, and styles to create visual interest and tell a story. Whether you opt for a symmetrical grid layout or an eclectic salon-style arrangement, gallery walls allow you to display multiple pieces of art while adding personality and personality to your space.
We have used many different types of gallery walls in our home. Some symmetrical with photos or memories and then some with small/large framed painting or prints.
Incorporate Sculptural Elements:
For a unique and unexpected twist, consider incorporating sculptural elements into your art display. Mix two-dimensional artwork with three-dimensional sculptures or art objects to create depth and dimension on your walls. Sculptural pieces can add texture, movement, and a tactile quality to your space, enhancing the overall visual impact of your art display. From abstract sculptures to ceramic vases or metal wall art, the possibilities are endless for adding sculptural interest to your home decor.
In our home, we have baskets and even surfboards lining the walls. I prefer to have items like this instead of frames everywhere. Get creative and play with different ways to do this!
With these five tips, you can master the art of displaying art in your home, creating a visually stunning and personalized space that reflects your style, creativity, and personality. Whether you’re mixing vintage with new, creating your own artwork, using different styles and mediums, embracing gallery walls, or incorporating sculptural elements, let your imagination run wild and transform your home into a gallery of inspired beauty.
I enjoyed your 3 tips on hanging artwork. I have visited your site through Karianne at Thistlewood Farms blog. I was wondering if you could share your source for the large potted tree/plant that is in your living room by the fireplace and surfboards? it’s very interesting!
Thanks – Julie
Hi Juliana, thank you so much and I am so happy to have you here visiting =). That specific plant was actually an umbrella plant I got at one of our local nurseries. I eventually lost it over the holiday season unfortunately, because it did not get the proper lighting in the room I moved it. I have since put a faux tree there, but did love the umbrella one!
