Faux Fireplace Makeover – Part 1
We are transforming our living space with a stunning faux fireplace makeover, building it up and out for a cozy and stylish focal point.
With a few simple upgrades, we are going to create the perfect blend of warmth and elegance, adding a touch of charm to our room. Here’s a look at the progress thus far!
It has long been on my to-do wish list to upgrade our fireplace and build it in. If you are not familiar with the history of this particular faux fireplace, it was built from pieces of our old home (past projects we had done there). We sold our home of 12 years and were temporarily moving into my husband’s Grandfather’s basement. This was temporary as it was in between our move from Washington (Seattle) to California. The fireplace was a statement piece for decorating in the basement and I loved it so much there. When we moved to this home we took it with us and positioned it here. It actually worked really well. I always knew though that I would want to customize it to fit this space a bit better!
That is where the makeover comes in and I am sharing how we are moving through the process. We originally had another plan in mind with this makeover, but our budget said otherwise. We wanted to be financially responsible, so we took things in another design direction. Now we are using most of what we have with wood scraps and making this work! We are getting close to completion, but still not quite finished. I am really hoping to get quite a bit done this weekend if possible.
To start, these are very high ceilings in this room… So it was an easy decision to build the fireplace up higher. I wanted something traditional, but not too modern. I landed on a tapered top. We also really wanted to have the hearth be a place you could sit.
We took the shell of the original built fireplace and created framing underneath. Once we had that up, we sat with it a bit to see how tall we wanted the mantel.
This became obivious the mantel would need to come down in height. Tyler did a great job removing the mantel and lowering everything about a foot.
Even though things were looking a bit rough and unfinished, I could tell very quickly how much better this would look in our home!
We also wanted to create more depth to the bottom half, so that our faux fireplace insert could fit in better.
Next we had some random left over sections of beams, drywall, etc… You can see how we pieced these things together to frame out the shape of the new faux fireplace. I couldn’t help but decorate it with my fall leaves as we worked on it, lol.
At this point, we are facing everything with drywall and making a surface for the faux brick veneer. I found a product that I will share more about once I start installing it. I am very excited and hopeful that this will work well! This brick veneer was budget friendly and seems to be an easy to use material.
I am still playing around with how I will install it. Once it gets installed it will get painted too.
I am so eager to get this done and decorate it for the holiday seasons! Stay tuned as I continue to share…
Thanks for sharing, I can’t wait to see the end result! I know it will look great.
