Gluten and Dairy Free Apple Crisp
How to make a Fall inspired Apple Crisp!
Gluten/Dairy Free Apple Crisp Dessert!
Hello friends! Oh my goodness, what started out as a short break from the blog this summer turned out to be a break for the entire summer! It was so necessary as I took the time to refresh, revisit my goals and ready to jump right in this Fall. Which is why I am so excited for today! I have very much missed visiting with you all! I am joining my friend Kristen at Ella Claire for another recipe series. The theme for this round is apple everything and trust me when I say, you will want to check out all of these recipes as they look amazing!
If you have followed along for a while now, you will remember that we have transitioned to a gluten/dairy free and whole foods lifestyle at our house for varying health reasons. This is something that I am excited to share more and more about this year with you as well. So today I am showing you how to make this easy gluten/dairy free apple crisp!
It was a hit here at the house as the kids and hubby loved it too. I even got to serve it to my Father-in-Law who was here so generously helping us get our laundry room made over (can’t wait to share that with you soon)!
This recipe does use oats/nuts so if you have any issues with either of those you could omit for other types of flours and crisp…
I try my best to make things that have natural sweetness with fruit, honey or syrup… Occasionally I will add in the coconut sugar for that extra punch of sweet.
What I also really like about this treat is that it is versatile throughout the year. You could substitute the apples for any fruit of the season. Think peaches, plums, cherries or mixed berries!
Throw it in a casserole dish and bring it along for a potluck dessert!
Anyhow, I hope that you enjoy and make sure to check out these simple steps for this fall inspired dish!
I used a square 8×8 glass dish for the recipe.
For the crisp topping you will need:
- 1 1/2 cups oatmeal
- 1/2 cup almond flour
- 1/4 cup coconut sugar
- 1/2 cup almond slivers
- dash of salt
- dash of coconut shavings (optional)
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 4 tbsp. coconut oil melted
- 1 tbsp. maple syrup
- 2 tbsp. honey
For the apple filling you will need:
- 8-10 green apples
- 1 tbsp. arrowroot powder (this acts as a thickener for the sauce)
- 1/4 cup coconut sugar
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- dash of salt
- 2 tbsp. syrup
- 1 tsp. vanilla
For the crust which is optional, you can use this cracker recipe here, but add 2 tbsp. of coconut sugar to sweeten it a bit.
To make the crisp you will follow these easy steps!
- Set the oven to 350 degrees.
- Optional: Make a crust using this recipe here and press the dough into the bottom of your glass dish. Bake for about 10-15 minutes until it is mostly set and hardened. Set out to cool while your prepare the rest of the filling/topping. If you choose to omit this step, you could just oil the glass dish with a little coconut oil.
- Now begin to mix all the ingredients for your crisp topping. I like to mix the dry and wet separate, then combine together. Set aside for later.
- Next, you will begin to peel, core and cut your apples into slender wedges.
- Add the wet/dry ingredients to your apples and mix until the apples are nice and coated.
- Begin layering the dessert. The dressed apples go on top of the crust or oiled dish. Then sprinkle the crisp topping evenly above.
- Set the dish in the oven for 30 – 35 minutes and watch carefully towards the end as thing begin to brown very quickly.
- Once the dish is baked let it sit out to cool before enjoying!
And there you have it! I hope you enjoy! Please make sure to go and visit my friends below who are also sharing some seriously delicious recipes today!
