DIY Shell Planter
Well friends, the time has come for summer posts and to be honest, I couldn’t be more excited! This is one of my favorite seasons and I am thrilled to share how we enjoy it here at Zevy Joy! I am joining Krista at The Happy Housie sharing how to DIY a shell planter.
It may come as no surprise that I have been simplifying around here and so it goes the same with my DIY’s as well. I wanted to do something that was summer inspired, but that could be done and enjoyed within a short amount of time. I had this large conch shell sitting around our home and it got my wheels spinning.
Here is what I used:
- A big shell with an opening large enough to plant inside (and ideally it should have a slit or naturally have holes that the water can run out of.
- A small assortment of tiny plants (how many will depend on the size of the shell).
- Potting soil may be necessary… Although I was able to use what came with the plants and didn’t need excess.
Here is how I pulled this easy project together:
I started at the base of the shell and chose to carefully push the roots/ soil into the opening. I wanted something that would drape and hang over the end as well.
Then I kept moving up the shell as I continued to follow the same steps and plant. And that was it! So easy, it seems a bit silly to call it a DIY as it was so easy, but I love it! It is the perfect amount of summer decor. Anything with plants is a win – win as well ;).
I put it here on our side table, but this would make fabulous coffee table decor or a part of shelving arrangements!
I already watered mine once I was done and it did great! The water ran straight out the bottom corner of the shell.
*I would be aware if there isn’t a place for the water to escape, it could get moldy and you don’t want that.
Anyhow, I hope you enjoyed and maybe you will put a couple of these around your home too. I see larger shells at thrift stores and antique stores often, so keep your eyes open if you are ever shopping at places like that!

Great use of what you had, quick and easy, A+ 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
How cute! Could you tell me where your rug is from?
That’s it! I have to head to the beach this summer, if but for no other reason than to get a large shell to use as a planter!!! Cute idea!
I love easy and coastal so this is the PERFECT craft. I’ve filled a giant faux shell with plants or succulents but haven’t used a real one yet. Wish we got giant shells like this at the beach here.
