Creating a warm, functional, and aesthetically pleasing kitchen isn’t just about choosing the right appliances or paint color. Sometimes, it’s the little details—those thoughtful touches—that make all the difference.
Today, I’m excited to share three of my absolute must-have kitchen essentials that not only elevate the look of the space but also enhance its functionality: a stone dish drying mat, a lamp in the kitchen, and a touch of greenery.

1. The Stone Dish Drying Mat: A Chic and Functional Upgrade

Let’s face it—traditional dish drying racks can take up a lot of visual space. Even the sleek, stainless steel versions don’t always blend seamlessly with the rest of the kitchen decor. There’s nothing wrong with that though, I have just learned over time I prefer something that doesn’t feel so heavy. That’s where the stone dish drying mat comes in, and trust me, it’s a game changer.
A stone dish drying mat, brings a sophisticated, natural element to the kitchen. Not only does it look beautiful on the countertop, but it’s also incredibly practical. The mat’s material helps with quick drying, and it sits there on the counter looking pretty.
I love how it blends seamlessly with my kitchen’s aesthetic, adding a touch of luxury without being over-the-top. I have found it is important to follow the manufacturer’s tips on how to avoid staining.
Why I Love It:
- Aesthetic Appeal: While it is not a perfect match, the look mimics my countertops.
- Functional Appeal: It’s perfect for drying dishes on the counter without having to pull out bulky racks or towels, etc…
If you’re looking to elevate your kitchen’s look while adding a functional piece, the stone dish drying mat is an essential worth investing in.
Here are some dish drying mats to consider (my specific size is unavailable, but I found similar options):
2. A Lamp in the Kitchen: Cozy Lighting for the Heart of the Home

When you think of kitchen lighting, you probably imagine recessed lights, pendant fixtures over the island, or maybe even under-cabinet lighting. But have you ever considered adding a lamp to your kitchen?
Adding a lamp to our kitchen was one of the best decisions I’ve made in terms of both decor and functionality. The soft, ambient light from the lamp creates a cozy, inviting atmosphere that overhead lighting just can’t replicate. It turns the kitchen from just a place to cook into a warm, welcoming space where family and friends naturally gather.
I have a small lamp tucked placed on our countertop, and it’s perfect for those early mornings when I’m sipping coffee or late evenings when I’m unwinding after dinner. The warm glow adds character and makes the kitchen feel more like an extension of the living space rather than just a utilitarian room.
Why I Love It:
- Creates Warmth: The soft lighting adds warmth and charm, making the kitchen feel more like a living space.
- Versatile Decor Element: A lamp can be a statement piece, adding color, texture, or a pop of style.
- Energy Efficient: Using a lamp instead of overhead lights is perfect for low-light needs, saving on energy costs.
If you’re looking for an easy, affordable way to make your kitchen feel cozier, I highly recommend finding a lamp that complements your decor. It’s an unexpected touch that makes a big difference.
3. Greenery: Bringing Life into the Kitchen

No space feels complete without a little greenery, and the kitchen is no exception. Adding plants to my kitchen has been one of the simplest ways to breathe life into the space. Whether it’s a small herb garden on the windowsill, a potted plant on the counter, or even a hanging planter, greenery instantly makes the kitchen feel fresh and vibrant.
I personally love having a mix of functional and decorative plants. Fresh herbs like basil, rosemary, and mint not only add a pop of green but also make cooking more fun and flavorful. For the past year, I have a large bowl filled with herbs. I keep them in their containers and just place them in the large bowl. For purely decorative purposes, I adore trailing pothos, snake plants, or even a little fiddle leaf fig if there’s enough light.
Plants bring a sense of calm and balance, softening the harder edges of kitchen counters and cabinets. Plus, they help purify the air, which is always a bonus in a space where food is being prepared.
Why I Love It:
- Natural Beauty: Plants add a fresh, natural element to the space.
- Functional Decor: Growing herbs provides both aesthetic appeal and practical use in cooking.
- Mood Booster: Greenery brings a sense of tranquility and positivity to the kitchen.
If you’re not sure where to start, go for low-maintenance plants like succulents or pothos, which thrive even if you don’t have a green thumb. Over time, you’ll find that the greenery becomes an essential part of your kitchen’s personality.
Bringing It All Together

I’m going to look into a drying stone for sure! I have 3 small lamps in my kitchen, I love the ambiance a little lamp brings. Looking back, I discovered I’ve been using lamps and plants in the kitchen since at least the 80’s given the pictures I have of my homes over the years. Makes me happy that they are still a kitchen staple for some of us! I started adding framed art a few years ago as well, and now wonder why I didn’t do that all along. Other than a couple of framed snapshots of my dogs, I didn’t think about how much I love framed art in the kitchen. Sure ups the cozy!
