Designing and creating on a simple budget.

What to Think About When Designing a Dining Room and a New Rug

April 5, 2016 our home, Uncategorized

HowtoDesignaDiningRoom

I have spent some time working on our dining room and it didn’t happen over night (you can see it in some tours here, here and here). I have slowly collected pieces that are special, restored or repurposed furniture and changed things around until it felt “right”.  That is the key word, till it felt “right” (for our family). I am not a designer and I love to share things with you that I have learned along the way.  But most importantly, I hope that I leave the encouragement that it should be your home and feel like home to you.

So here are the key points I think are valuable when designing a dining space…

  • COMFORTABLE SEATING – this helps guests want to stay longer and enjoy the time around those warm cooked meals that you have spent time making (or buying at a favorite local take out restaurant ;)).

HowtoDesignaDiningRoom

  • AND LOTS OF IT… having additional seating allows guests to spread out and feel welcome.  It can be as simple as extra cushions to sit at on the floor or a settee as seen here.

  • LIGHTING – Overhead lighting is key and an extra bonus if you can invest in a dimmer. This gives you the chance to control the ambiance. (Information on our chandelier (here).

  • LIGHTING IN ALL SHAPES AND FORMS – not only overhead lighting, but lamps are a great addition to a dining room.  It gives off soft light and again, adds to the overall feeling of the room.

  • PLACES FOR HOLDING GREENERY OR FLORALS – these jars have become a great way to display seasonal greenery and flowers.  It can be simple and just a single vessel will do the trick!

HowtoDesignaDiningRoom

  • TABLETOPS FOR EATING AND DECORATING – obviously your table will serve its biggest purpose for dining, but is a wonderful place to display settings or a simple basket of flowers.

HowtoDesignaDiningRoom

  • PILLOWS AND THROWS – pillows and throws add texture/comfort to any space. Long conversations are made more comfortable with a pillow for back support.

HowtoDesignaDiningRoom

  • A SPOT FOR EVERYONE – every part of the family should feel welcome and have a place to enjoy while all the visiting is going on.

  • A RUG – rugs are another wonderful way to add texture or color to your dining room.  As you may notice, we have a new rug (called the Maui Jute Braided Rug) from Rugs USA. Like I mentioned earlier, the texture is lofty, the woven pieces add interest to our floors and the colors blend perfectly with our rattan chairs.  It is a neutral palette with earthy tones.  Comfort is key and it truly is comfortable to walk on (not scratchy – something I always pay close attention to).

  • ONE THAT FITS APPROPRIATELY IS NICE TOO – this suggestion is a new one for us here.  We had a rug previously, but since changing tables and end chairs the rug was too small. Over time our chairs wore down the edges and they were fraying badly – in fact the glue was crumbling and it wasn’t good to keep the rug any longer.  So as you can imagine this rug from Rugs USA was an exciting addition for many reasons.  Not only was it in tact, it was the right size.  Now our chairs can be moved in and out without worry of ruining the rug.

I would happily recommend this rug!

In closing, while I did not have these things all at once, they were fun to develop in time (you can read about how we have collected items for our home here).  This room has seen many stages and lots of love, I intend for it to see many more.  What it looks like or what sits in there doesn’t make those memories.  It is the joy of meals, company and lots of laughter that make our dining spaces.

Enjoy what makes your home yours and I hope this helps when thinking about dining rooms generally! Thanks so much for stopping by friends!

(Even though I was compensated with product by Rugs USA, all opinions are truly my own).

Just Beautiful! I also love that rug. Can you please share where your Ratan chairs are from? I have been looking for something similar with no luck. Thanks!

I was wondering if you use rug pads? Your home is so pretty. I love all the windows. Happy Mothers Day.

I love wind chimes, chirping birds and dripping fountains... So you can imagine how fun it has been to be inside with the windows open and hearing all if those noises at once 💕. This could be a project that would be easily done with inexpensive pieces and makes a big impact for your outdoor space. Speaking of outdoor spaces, I shared ours all ready for summer up on the blog along with my friends. Come check it out if you need some easy ideas!

I am talking about how we use drawers, but try to keep things pretty/functional at the same time... Come check it out and see how we think outside the box when it comes to this space! One of my new favorite tips comes from these 100% Cotton Turkish towels we were gifted from @theloomia! Not only are they pretty, they are large, but save space at the same time... You’ll have to go see what I mean in my stories, see you there! And @theloomia is offering 15% off when you use the code - Zevyjoy15 💕

And this hallway is finally done 🎉! Here is a little before and after... The board and batten design is from @anitayokota after I saw how she used it in her pretty bedroom I knew this would put a fun modern spin in the hallway. Some fresh paint, an affordable vintage rug and updated lighting completed this long dark space. Covering popcorn ceilings will come next, but I hope this shows how a little trim and paint go a long way when working on spaces! 🌿

We both walked out dressed sorta matching this morning 😂 This girl knows what she likes and asked to have her pink room transformed with blue... And you know when you give a mouse a cookie... 🍪 (Clearly I am the mouse 🐭 in this story 🤣) We finished up the new bead-board wall (I have trim touch up to do still) and then we are finishing spraying her little desk this afternoon. A couple vintage pieces are on the way, but otherwise I have been shopping the house for this little makeover. It’s all still in progress, but getting closer! And you all... This room is small!! Ever since I was little I can remember my dad tell Ever since I was little I can remember my dad telling me (who is a contractor/designer) the importance of using 3’s 💕. Now as I have made our own home, I almost always use the rule of 3’s whenever I am decorating. That goes for coffee tables, nightstands and more... I’m talking all about it and showing you some examples in stories today! And even more fun is that @boutiquerugs is offering 60% off with the code - ZEVYJOY60 ! This is the new rug we added from their collection to our bedroom here! So enjoy and have fun looking around at all their pretty selections... #boutiquerugspartner
You all know how I feel about pillows by now, don’t you?! 😂 Well in case you don’t... I think they are the best! They pull a space together affordably and make things cozy of course! You can trade them out or just keep adding to them (which is what I like to do 😉). And let’s face it, you can never have too many... Am I right? They are your artistic canvas in home decor and in my opinion there aren’t many rules to follow in the fun of mixing and matching them either! 🌿
Best of all, I’ve teamed up with 7 talented accounts to share how we used pillows to style our spaces. Head on over and check out what they’ve done... @thegingerhome
