We have lived in our home now for 4 years, I honestly can’t believe that! Time has just flown by… Anyhow, I have spent time over these years really trying to tune into the kitchen and the best ways for it to function. I specifically have worked on how best to use the cabinets. Storage for older kitchens can feel tricky as they were built standard without many of the newer features you see today.

Our kitchen was built in the early 80’s and there are no special bells or whistles. I have made some purchases over the last year that have been helpful though. My most recent purchases may be my favorite yet! They have really made the most of our cabinets and I do really wish we would have done this sooner.
Pull-Out Cabinet Organizers

Last month we installed these pull-out cabinet organizers. They are expandable and they are so good! That means you can fit them to your cabinets. They come in a variety of sizes as well. I have some smaller ones in our narrow cabinets as well.
You can either use the stickers they come with or drill them in. We chose to drill them in. They slide in and out and can make fitting things into your cabinets much easier. Things that I would have to get down on the ground, reach far back into the cabinets for are no longer a hassle to get to.

I simply slide the organizer out and can see everything easily. I knew it would be helpful to have these, but I was surprised how much better it made things!

In this particular set of cabinets, I store glass food containers, our blender/blender accessories, small appliances and strainers, small prep bowls, etc…
Hidden Trash Can System

We also added this slide-out trash can system to one of our cabinets. I had a standard trash can sitting on our wall in the kitchen over by the refrigerator. Over time though, it began to drive me crazy as it just felt in the way! It was bulky and we don’t have a very big kitchen. Recently I decided we needed a solution because I really disliked how it was feeling space wise. It was also always marking up our wall and just looked really messy.

That’s where this slide out trash can came in and we have zero regrets! Now the trash can is hidden away, in an accessible space and makes more room for us to walk around.
The install was pretty straightforward and I know that these systems are available in varying sizes for different cabinets.

We moved the cabinet knob so that it was easier to pull the trashcan out.
The only negative that I see here has been that the trashcan is a bit smaller than our old standard one. But I wouldn’t change things and on the flip side of that is that we are doing a better job of emptying the trashcan. Due to the smaller size, this one doesn’t get filled to the brim, haha.
While these are simple changes to our cabinets they have made big impact on how our kitchen functions for us! The convenience is so much better. Ultimately it has changed the look of our kitchen especially with the trashcan and in the long run opened up more space for us in our cabinet as well.
